Current configuration - Exchange server 2010 retrieves email, distributes incoming email to mailboxes, sends outgoing mail out, shares calendars and contacts, allows OWA users to login for email, also external users VPN into the LAN and pickup their emails through Outlook when attached through the vpn.
Would like to disable the retrieval, distribution of email by the exchange server, also the OWA feature. Keep the contact and calendar sharing, and use the exchange server to backup our outlook clients. On the outlook clients add a pop3 client as the default account that would send/receive emails, and keep them in the exchange mailbox. Exchange would become a secondary account in the Outlook account settings.
Does this sound possible? If so how would you proceed?
